Google Business Profile Tips for Contractors in the Powder River Basin
What Powder River Basin contractors should actually do with their Google Business Profile to outrank competitors.

For a contractor working out of Gillette, Wright, or anywhere else in the Powder River Basin, your Google Business Profile usually matters more for getting phone calls than the rest of your website combined. It's free, it's what shows up first in Google Maps and the local three-pack, and most contractors are only half using it. Getting the details right — categories, service area, the services list, photos, posts, and how you handle reviews — is the fastest lever you have to pull.
Pick the right categories
Your primary category should be the single most accurate description of your business — "Roofing contractor," not "General contractor," if roofing is your main trade. Google gives real weight to your primary category when deciding which searches to show you for. Add secondary categories for other real services you offer, but don't pile on categories that don't apply just because they're related — that dilutes your relevance rather than expanding it.
Service-area business vs. storefront
Most contractors out here are service-area businesses — you go to the job, customers don't come to an office. In that case, hide your street address on the profile and set a service area instead, listing the towns and counties you actually cover (Gillette, Wright, Campbell County, and out to Sheridan, Buffalo, Douglas, or Newcastle if that's realistic for you). Don't list a city you'd only take a job in occasionally as a core service area — it can hurt your relevance in the towns where you actually do most of your work.
Fill out the Services section properly
Under the Services tab, list each service you offer as its own line item with a short description — "Metal roof replacement," "Roof repair and leak fixes," "Gutter installation." This does two things: it gives Google more specific text to match against searches, and it lets someone browsing your profile see exactly what you do without calling to ask. Keep pricing here directional if you include it at all — a dollar-sign range or "free estimate" note, not a fixed number that might not match reality on-site.
Photos and posts — do them regularly, not once
Google Posts (the little updates you can publish to your profile) are underused by most contractors. A short post when you finish a notable job, have an opening in your schedule, or run a seasonal offer keeps your profile active, and an active profile tends to get shown more than a stale one that hasn't been touched in a year.
Mistakes that get profiles suspended or buried
Google suspends or demotes profiles more often than people realize, and it's almost always for one of these reasons:
- Keyword-stuffing the business name (e.g. "Joe's Roofing Gillette WY Best Roofer") — this is against Google's guidelines and can get a profile suspended outright.
- Setting up multiple listings for the same business at different fake addresses to rank in more towns.
- Using a P.O. box or virtual office as a physical address when you're not actually a storefront business.
- Buying reviews or running review swaps with other businesses — Google's spam detection catches this more often than people expect.
- Letting a former employee or old agency keep admin access to the profile after they're gone.
What this looks like across the Basin
Contractors here often legitimately cover a huge service area — driving from Gillette to a job outside Wright or Newcastle isn't unusual. That's exactly why the service-area setting matters so much: get it right and you show up accurately across that whole radius; get it wrong and you either miss towns you actually serve or get flagged as spammy for claiming towns you don't. Because search volume in any one of these towns is small, a well-optimized profile can realistically dominate the local pack in more than one town at once if the setup is honest and complete.
