Web Design vs. Local SEO: What Should Wyoming Businesses Fix First?
If your website isn't driving leads, should you redesign or invest in local SEO first? Here's how to decide.

If your website isn't bringing in leads, the fix depends on whether the problem is that people aren't finding it or that they're finding it and leaving. Those are two different problems with two different fixes. If nobody's showing up on your site, local SEO is the priority. If plenty of people show up but don't call or fill out the form, the website itself — the design, the layout, the message — needs work first.
Start by checking two numbers
You need a rough answer to two questions: is traffic showing up on your site at all (from Google search, Maps, or search generally), and once people land, are they actually calling or filling out a form? You don't need fancy analytics to estimate this — Google Business Profile insights, basic website analytics, and just asking new customers how they found you will get you close enough.
| Getting traffic? | Getting leads? | What to fix first |
|---|---|---|
| No | No | Local SEO first — nobody can convert on a site they never see. |
| Yes | No | Web design/messaging first — traffic is being wasted on a site that doesn't convert. |
| No | Yes (from other sources) | Local SEO — your site converts fine, it just needs more people finding it through search. |
| Yes | Yes | Both are working; focus on scaling what's already converting and expanding service or city pages. |
If you're not getting traffic: fix findability first
A beautifully designed site that nobody searches for and finds is a brochure sitting in a drawer. If your Google Business Profile is incomplete, you don't have pages built around the services people actually search for, and you're not covering the towns you serve, redesigning the site's look won't move the needle. Work through a local SEO checklist first: profile completeness, service pages, service-area pages, and basic technical health (site loads fast, works on mobile, has HTTPS).
If you're getting traffic but no leads: fix the site
This is the more frustrating problem because the marketing is technically working — people are finding you — and the website is losing them anyway. Common culprits:
- Phone number isn't visible or clickable on mobile, where most visitors are.
- The homepage doesn't say clearly, in the first few seconds, what you do and where you serve.
- No clear call to action — visitors have to hunt for how to actually contact you.
- The site looks outdated or untrustworthy compared to competitors, so people bounce to the next search result.
- Contact forms are broken, too long, or don't send a confirmation.
- Site is slow to load, especially on a phone with weak signal — common in rural areas here.
A redesign doesn't have to mean starting over completely — sometimes it's fixing the header, simplifying the homepage, and making the phone number impossible to miss. Other times the site is old enough, or built on a platform limiting enough, that a full rebuild is the more sensible investment. Our page on web design in Gillette walks through what that process looks like and roughly what it costs.
A sequencing plan if you need both
Most businesses that have neglected their online presence for a while actually need both eventually. Here's the order that tends to produce results fastest without wasting money:
- Fix the Google Business Profile — free, fast, and often the single biggest lever for local visibility.
- Fix the obvious conversion problems on the current site — visible phone number, clear headline, working contact form — even before a full redesign.
- Build or fix core service pages and city/service-area pages so the site has something to rank for.
- Once traffic and basic conversion are both reasonable, invest in a fuller redesign if the site still looks or feels outdated.
- Layer in review generation and citation cleanup alongside all of the above — they support both traffic and trust.
